Another chapter of Why We Can’t Sleep, this one on job instability. It’s getting pretty depressing, reciting how difficult it is to get a job after forty, because apparently being young and attractive is more important than experienced and capable.
The book is still reciting problems, backed up with statistical evidence and individual stories, but it’s still short on solutions. I’m not sure what solace there is for, say, a fortysomething woman on her second or third career trying to get gainful employment and failing for no discernible reason, but the presentation of a problem without a path to resolve it is only half an argument.
Also read a short story by Mary Robinette Kowal from Uncanny Magazine, titled “Marginalia.” A quick read, interesting and engaging. Definitely recommended reading.
